Weekly Coffee Trivia:

In January, 1675 in England, certain merchants were angered when coffee was introduced. Those selling ale and wine felt threatened when coffee became more popular. They even launched a campaign to persuade Charles II to issue an order to suppress coffeehouses. Fortunately, public outcry forced the order to be retracted.

Sample Local Music Talent

Why do bands love playing at the mine?  "It's a great local venue to get close to our fans."  We love local talent and we love up and coming bands.  We support them, and you should too!  Check out a sampling of our "friends of the Mine" below:

 Nick O'Connor

Nick O'Connor is a composer who's poetry is mature beyond his years.

“My poetry is rooted in blues, jazz, folk, and natural country with undertones and influences from beatniks and hippies of the past...and rappers and rockers of the new millennium and beyond.”

“I'm not just a hip guy riding the latest trend...I'm writing my music and playing my songs and trying to put pure performance and art back into music,” says O'Connor. And art is exactly what Nick is producing. His premiere album ...Back to the Sensitive Ground, is an eclectic mix of blues, folk, and hard driving sixties and seventies-style “poetic rock”. O'Connor's poetry has been influenced by everyone from Walt Whitman to Bob Dylan and Woody Guthrie, as well as B.B. King, The Howlin' Wolf, Nirvana, and Kanye West. “All of those people are questioning truth, and crying the emotions of their times. In confusing times like these, the truth needs to be told.” Nick is constantly writing and exploring the numerous realms that surround, protect, and inspire us all.

Nick has teamed up with Grammy Award Winning producer Clark Hagan to create his latest work of art “Paper Thin Feelings.” “I don't just portray my own world...I observe and report what I see.”

The Alltunators

The Alltunators are an acoustic trio playing a mix of old-time blues, Americana, bluegrass, swing and original tunes. They combine powerful vocals and harmonies with a range of instrumentation including guitar, fiddle, mandolin and upright bass.

They are equally at home in a living room, coffee shop, pub or auditorium, and their performances come from the heart – you’ll be reminiscing about lost loves one minute and stomping your feet the next.

 Flowers From Ashes

Fan Review.

Flowers From Ashes is a conscious group of beautiful and talented musicians that seductively project their soulful melodies from deep within the collective heart and soul. A sweet blend of sugar and spice, carnal undertones are brought out by sexy blues guitar stylin's, primal body moving beats, and silky divine feminine harmonies. The lyrics provide a fresh perspective on the evolution of our souls, transmuting earthly pain into hope and love. Gift yourself with an incredible live experience, you are sure to move and be moved.

- Sherrie Freeville

Sons of Kirk

Singer-songwriting duo Tim and Dave Gaskins had been writing songs together since summer 2006 when, in November of the following year, they found the talented missing link, Dylan Huey on drums. This completed Sons Of Kirk, soon after playing several shows and honing in on a sound they could call their own.  They intentionally write songs to speak to the heart, realizing that music can have a monumental effect on a person's life.  While they normally play electric shows, their acoustic set with be featured at Cannon Mine.

Sister Merry Harmony
Sister Merry Harmony features all original music written and performed by members of the band. Though they are known mostly for their funny stuff, they do occasionally throw in a thoughtful, heart-wrenching or spiritual song for balance. The band members are Kate Ingmundson, vocals and kazoo; Annie Gifford, guitar, vocals, and kazoo; and Duffy Keith, bass, vocals and sermonizing. Chris Sydoriak will be joining us for three songs she composed with Kate. Bios? Well, everyone knows Duffy, cuz he’s a nice guy and everyone needs a bass player. The rest of us have no claim to fame, we just love writing songs and singing them for you!

A few words from our fans:

“They combine delightfully clever lyrics, irony, unique harmonies, and great props (including an orange couch that inspired many of their compositions).”
--Cynthia Gray

Today I was trying to describe some of the music you did last night to a coworker, but there was no way to really put it into words.  There was one of your songs where somewhere in the middle you do something VERY VERY different musically -- which just had me howling…it sounded like the train had come completely off the tracks.  You guys are MONSTERS to do stuff like that!
--Frank Braker

Jaden
Hello Everyone and Happy New Year!
7 year old guitar phenomenon Jaden will be performing some rock and reggae classics at the Cannon Mine Coffee House on Friday, January 23rd, at 7pm. She will be joined again with her friends Radioactive and Andrew Schiller. Hope you all can make it for another fun evening!

Braden Land
"Take a voice similar to Gram Parsons, add the harmonica sound of classic Dylan, a dash of solid acoustic guitar, some excellent lyrics, mix them all together, and you have Braden Land." -David Bowling of DailyVault.com

Stewart Erlich
Stewart Erlich is the songwriter for the group WadiRum and a favorite performer at The Mine. He has written and produced three cd's in the last six years, and one of them was nominated by the Indie Acoustic Project for the best acoustic album of 2006. His most recent cd was just released towards the end of 2008, and it is already garnering critical acclaim.

Kate Denning
A very local favorite that can always be seen around the Mine.  Kate's soulful acoustics have incredible messages and strength.   Some of Kate's influences are Dar Williams, Joni Mitchell, the Indigo Girls, Patty Griffin, Mindy Smith, as well as her lovely musician friends: Aaron Strumpel, Cait, Trace Bundy, and Kate Hurley.   Check out Kate's MySpace for a sample of her music.
